“Here’s what I’ve learned through it all:
Don’t give up; don’t be impatient;
be entwined as one with the Lord,
Be brave and courageous, and never lose hope.
Yes, keep on waiting – for he will never disappoint you!”
Psalm 27:14, Passion
The Psalmist David went through some heavy situations. I’m certain that the challenges he faced, the opportunities to throw in the towel and doubt the word and call of God, were more than equal to anything you or I have faced.
Hiding in a cave, your life threatened every moment by the most powerful man in the nation.
Betrayed hideously by your own son, seeking to strip you of dignity and your throne.
Bowed by the burden of your own murderous sin, the so-called man after God’s heart killing his friend in cold lustful blood.
Life stinks sometimes. Sometimes a lot of the time!
How you handle your heart in times of testing is telling.
My besetting attitude in such times is probably self-pity. That miserable frame of mind that drags it’s heels and droops it shoulders, bemoaning the unfairness of it all.
Yet, I’m one of the most blessed men I know.
Emotions are such a fickle master. One day I can be the proud conquering example of godly manhood, and the next a fearful worm of a boy terrified of my own shadow. What is with that? Both are fleeting images concocted by a mind looking to shape significance into an often spotted and potholed pathway through life. Thinking of ourselves too highly or lowly are two sides of the same insecure coin.
Sometimes praise flows like a mighty river from the overflow of my inner man, at other times it’s a rare juice sucked from a stony thankless heart.
If I choose to measure my self by my own performance as a ‘good Christian’ I would most certainly fall flat on my face more times than I care to imagine.
Instead, and this is the lesson it seems David learned well, there is an unchanging, flawless, fearless lover whom we are called to embrace. To entwine ourselves around and never let go.
A Personality so sure, so steadfast, so unmoved by circumstance, that we can trust Him entirely. More than we trust our feelings. More than we trust what we see. More than we trust ourselves.
In times when we feel we will topple and the harsh winds blow against us, or that we’ll drown as the untamed raging waters rise, His character is the sanctuary we run into.
“When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.” (Isaiah 43:2 KJV)
He is with us. Whatever we are facing. Whatever stage of the journey we are traversing. He is with us. With you. In the highs and the lows. He is there. He is here now.
Don’t give up!
Don’t let impatience rob you of your trust and steal your peace.
Never lose hope.
Keep on waiting. Wrap yourself around God’s promises, and allow Him to wrap His presence around you, shielding you from the harsh winds that lash against your soul.
Our Father is faithful. He will never give up on you!
“Papa, it’s easy to write these words when all is well and the sun is shining brightly in my heart. Not so when the darkness buffets me with accusations and disaster. My prayer right now is that the lesson David learned, and shares here in this Psalm, will be one you teach me. That my heart will be soft and pliable in your hand, not seeking its significance in a thousand other fickle things. I want to serve you, and love you truly and passionately, whatever seasons bring. Daddy God, let me be a child on the one hand and a brave courageous warrior on the other. Let me face you with reverent fear and simple childlike faith in your love, and face the world with fearless brave heart courage knowing that you will never leave me nor let me down.”
“Darling child, life is indeed lived on levels. Every test you face calls you higher and deeper in me. I want to be your strength in times of weakness, your defender when darkness strikes. Take time to be with me in the light, internalize my truths and drink deeply of my character. Whan hard times come the roots of relationship you put down now will be the ones that hold you strong. Even in the desert days your roots will draw sustenance from my wells. When the storms lash, your high tower will be the revelation of my name. When fire flies my truth shall be your shield.”
