“For the Lord’s greatness is beyond description
and He deserves all the praise that comes to him.
He is our King God and it’s right to be in holy awe of him.
Other Gods are absolutely worthless
For the Lord God is Creator God
who spread the splendour of the skies!
Breathtaking brilliance and awe-inspiring majesty
radiate from his shining presence.
His stunning beauty overwhelms all who come before him.”
Different sections of the Psalms seem to shed light on different facets of God’s greatness. And Greatness is the word that sums up many of the Psalms in the 90’s. Each of these Psalms in this section radically extols the majesty and praiseworthiness of the God we serve. The language is royal and expansive. The vastness of God’s person and the awe with which we should approach him are baked into every line.
Reading them makes me hunger for the glory!
God is so much bigger, immensely more powerful and infinitely more magnificent than any human mind could ever conceive. To encounter him is to be undone.
Think of John in his visionary account recorded in Revelation. He fell down as one dead when faced with the resurrected majesty of God. Or Isaiah’s vision of God with the train of his robe filling the temple and the terror it stuck in his heart. A terror rooted not in fear but reverent awe. A recognition that the weight of God’s glory can crush us like a frail insect if it were not covered with a cloak of grace.
“No man can look on my face and live!” This was God’s message to Moses in Exodus 33.
I am strong advocate of God’s closeness, his humility, his deep and open friendship. I believe and practice a conversation with the Papa, Son and Holy Ghost that is comfortable and familiar.
Yet my heart hungers with an equal passion for the Otherness of God.
To know him in his glory. To be undone in His presence. To be so awed by his holiness that my defenses and pitifully tiny view of the world is melted like burning wax along with whatever proud mountain stands in the way of His moving.
I remember several occasions when God has come in a manner that caused my heart to tremble, and I long for similar encounters today. Encounters with the indescribably great King God, in whose presence every idol and false thing is annihilated. The massive monumental Spirit who slays his enemies and humbles even the proudest hearts.
One of those cherished memories was a night two or three friends and I stayed back after church service to pray and seek God further. We prayed vehemently for an hour, crying out for more. And after that hour, stirred ourselves again to press beyond our flesh and discover more of the True and living One. Then a third and a fourth. These were not feathery light prayers. We yearned and cried loudly from the very depth of our being, filling that old warehouse where we held church with loud heartfelt petitions. The kind of praying that leaves you wet with perspiration. The kind of prayer that drives the political correctness from your system, and terrifies your mind with all of its reasonings. This was the kind of prayer that Jacob prayed as he wrestled with divinity. The kind of prayer that refuses to let go until the blessing is given.
And blessing came. So heavy, so real, so tangible that we were unable to walk or even crawl. God’s holy nature was so evident in the atmosphere we could take no more than two small crawling steps before we had to bow and worship again.
At that time I was responsible for the building we met in. I had to check doors and ensure all was secure before leaving the building and setting alarms.
That night, one that I vividly remember, it took hours to make my way across the auditorium. Every cell of my body was awakened to the fearful, awesome presence of a Being far beyond my ability to comprehend. This was not a time to understand, converse or question. It was a time to bow in reverence and worship. No other response was possible. God, the great God, the Maker and the Master, was present and every breath was sanctified to recognise His utter centrality.
Encounters with the glory change us. They touch the heart so profoundly and impact our emotions so deeply that we cannot ever see the world in the same light again. We have been changed forever by the forever God, the Everlasting all-powerful, all-seeing all-knowing God.
Our experience will rarely rise above our expectation.
That is why I believe a thorough knowledge of the Bible is so essential.
We cannot base our view of Papa on a few select sermons, or a slanted theology that emphasises just one or two aspects of His nature.
Scripture burns with revelation of a God far more powerful and infinitely greater than any human mind could understand or express. He must be experienced, and the avenues he has opened are the glory of prayer, and the wonder of His Word.
Don’t settle for a promise-box Christian existence where you eat only slivers and crumbs of doctrine, living far below your inheritance as a child of God.
Let the pictures of his glory painted on the pages of the Bible leap into your heart and scream, “This is YOUR God! This is YOUR Father! He want to show Himself STONG on your behalf, and bring you into the blazing light of resurrection truth!”
Our God is GREAT!
Our God is truly AWESOME!
His MAGNIFICENCE is beyond imagination.
His HOLINESS humbles the kings of the earth.
“Papa, God, Holy One, King of so much more than my heart. You are the One and only true God. Let me heart be awed by your truth and your presence. I invite your Spirit to reveal majesty to my understanding. I call with passionate hunger and humility to be shaped for your glory, prepared for your presence and moulded by your truth. Let my inner man comprehend your magnificence, and forgive my awful habit of seeing you way too small. God, show me your GLORY. Let me changed in the light of revelation. The transforming reality of a Being of Light, Life and Love who measured the heavens with the span of his hand. God! God! God! YOU are the only answer to the awful cry of my hungry heart!”
“Child, my Word was given as a doorway to my person. I offered my words to bring you to my Son, so He could show my glory in its fullness to your heart, and quench your spiritual thirst. Come drink of me, and do not rush away. Let the busyness of your inner world subside, so your vision becomes clear and your focus is settled. As much as you long for me, so I long to reveal myself to you. Your cry will not go unanswered. But the price, is all else. Nothing must stand in the way. Nothing must take my place in your heart and affections. Keep peeling away the layers of falsity that cloud your attention, and come humbly, honorably and with a sure expectation of my goodness. I love you, and my hearts desire is that you would know me thoroughly, just as I know you.”
