Nothing can ever replace the pure unadulterated Word of God, and no ‘experience’ should supersede the truths that are found therein. However, if the truths you read in the Bible do not lead to experiencing the One who wrote them you are missing the point. The Word is a doorway to more than mere knowledge, it is the glorious pathway to Presence! God wants to meet with you, and the avenue He has chosen is through faith in His eternal words as recorded in the Bible.
The Bible is a living document designed to bring you into glorious life.
Words Open Worlds
I have recently been writing a book about one of my favorite subjects of all, praying and speaking in tongues. What a marvelous blessing it is that Jesus would send the Holy Spirit to live in us, and release us from the restrictions of our natural tongue in order that we can venture deeper into the things of the spirit, where our Father dwells. In researching however I came across a great deal of controversy concerning the gift. Some well-respected and sincere Bible teachers even deny that tongues if a gift that is available to believers in our day.
I have to say that I agree with Paul in Galatians chapter 2:
“who they are before men makes no difference to me, for God is not impressed by the reputations of men.” Galatians 2:6, PASSION
Such people, regardless of their exalted reputations, have exalted their experience (or lack of it in respect to baptism in the Holy Spirit) over what the Bible clearly teaches.
But I’m not here to defend the doctrine of tongues. I don’t need to, God has done a fine job of that through the centuries. I’m here to encourage you to step from the shore of theology into the vast ocean of experience.
The God of the Bible wants to meet with you personally!
When He declares Himself your healer, His intent is your healing.
As the One named Savior, He wants to usher you into a glorious salvation.
He is named not for your information, but for your transformation.
I love Peter’s words:
“According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” (2 Peter 1:3–4 KJV)
Through the promises we partake of God’s nature, and divine power is released in every arena of life. His promises are packages sent from Heaven waiting to be opened here on earth. Faith in the Word is the means of opening them. Their intended use is not to sit under the tree looking pretty and clothed in bright religious bows. They are meant to be torn open and celebrated! Oh, wonderful Word of God!
Know God, The Person Behind the Page
The beauty of knowing God is far more satisfying than knowing about Him.
Job, a man who walked closely with the King, was flabbergasted when his eyes were truly opened to the Real. He lamented in dust and ashes that his theology, even though orthodox and accurate, fell far short of the blazing reality of the True.
“Then Job replied to the LORD: “I know that you can do anything, and no one can stop you. You asked, ‘Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorance?’ It is I—and I was talking about things I knew nothing about, things far too wonderful for me. You said, ‘Listen and I will speak! I have some questions for you, and you must answer them.’ I had only heard about you before, but now I have seen you with my own eyes. I take back everything I said, and I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance.”” (Job 42:1–6 NLT-SE)
How utterly humbling to know that behind the words of the page is a Person. A Person fearful in holiness, perfect in righteousness, blazing like an inferno of glory! An almighty God seated on the throne of the universe, having all things in hand and knowing every atom inside out. A terrible judge of all that’s wrong and generous rewarder of faithful obedience.
His scepter is extended to you!
Goodness and Severity
Lord, open my eyes to see and to experience you as you truly are, in all of your goodness and severity. Let your holiness slay my selfish ways, and your grace lift me higher than I ever could imagine.
Hear this prayer and make it your own…
“May Christ through your faith [actually] dwell (settle down, abide, make His permanent home) in your hearts! May you be rooted deep in love and founded securely on love, That you may have the power and be strong to apprehend and grasp with all the saints [God’s devoted people, the experience of that love] what is the breadth and length and height and depth [of it]; [That you may really come] to know [practically, through experience for yourselves] the love of Christ, which far surpasses mere knowledge [without experience]; that you may be filled [through all your being] unto all the fullness of God [may have the richest measure of the divine Presence, and become a body wholly filled and flooded with God Himself]!” (Ephesians 3:17–19 AMP)
May my theology of a Father be outshone by a revelation of Abba!
May my eager desire to serve be obliterated by the blinding light of Sonship!
May my efforts to be good be blasted by the bloody truth of righteousness imputed!
When Papa arrives on the scene no religious box is far and wide enough to comprehend Him. No doctrine capable of being held by human mind is sufficient to even touch the edges of Reality.
Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! That I might worship you as you truly are and not according to my own conception of You. Blast the cobwebs from my thinking and drag me boots and all into a fresh encounter!
