As men of God we must come to Word as a raw, living reality. God’s words are alive. They are life and spirit, sharper than any sword. If the Word is not slicing through the layers of unbelief people have wrapped themselves in, maybe it’s time to sharpen things up.
It is way too easy to settle for a form of Godliness devoid of power. Biblical Christianity is not a religion of words only. The intention is that demonstration and power attend every declaration.
Paul was able say:
“And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:” (1 Corinthians 2:4 KJV)
He understood that the faith of the church could not be founded on human wisdom or excellence. Our faith must ultimately reside in God and God alone, not merely clever explanations and expositions.
The Lord’s natural brother, Jude, urged his followers to:
“…earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” (Jude 1:3 KJV)
Contending for the faith does not just mean the orthodoxy of doctrine, it means contending in prayer for the Truth to be demonstrated in our generation!
I love the prayers of the early church recorded in the early chapters of Acts.
“…they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is … grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, by stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.” (Acts 4:24–31 KJV)
Their earnest prayer was that Papa would stretch forth His hand and confirm the words they were speaking. They understood that bare rhetoric could not even come close to meeting the desperate needs of the day. The same is true in our generation. People do not need another religion on the smorgasbord table to pick and choose from. Christianity is not one of many; it is THE Way, THE Truth and THE Life.
The one essential is that the Life must be manifest when the Way is preached.
In Deuteronomy chapter 32 the song of Moses is recorded. Verses 46-47 read:
“And he said unto them, Set your hearts unto all the words which I testify among you this day…For it is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life.” (Deuteronomy 32:46–47 KJV)
The word translated life here is the Hebrew “chay” meaning alive, strong, fresh and raw!
Why does the Lord need to remind us that it is not a vain thing to set our hearts and seek His Word? Because it way too easy to become so familiar with the Good Book that we no longer see just how explosive it is! Good hearted people settle into a pale reflection of what’s possible and call it Christianity.
It is time to stir ourselves up to seek the Living God, and place an urgent demand on His Word and His promises.
Nothing less than the promise of Jesus should satisfy our hungry hearts. Jesus promised His disciples that He will confirm His Word with signs and wonders. They believed it, and saw the fruit of a supernatural life manifest on the earth in magnificent ways:
“And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.” (Mark 16:20 KJV)
Oh, how we need the miraculous in our day! The world needs to see a demonstration of the resurrection power of the risen Christ. God’s Word, and the preaching of it, should be attended by irrefutable proofs.
We call ourselves witnesses, but what use is a witness if he or she cannot offer proof of their testimony?
I love these words in the Amplified Bible:
“To them also He showed Himself alive after His passion (His suffering in the garden and on the cross) by [a series of] many convincing demonstrations [unquestionable evidences and infallible proofs], appearing to them during forty days and talking [to them] about the things of the kingdom of God.” (Acts 1:3 AMPLIFIED)
Would you agree that such convincing demonstrations and infallible proofs are needed today? In a generation lost in darkness, groping for something real, and bombarded by falsity from every direction, the need has never been greater.
The raw, living, fresh Word of Heaven is needed. Bold proclaimers who bring substance to their sermons – fresh, hot bread that feeds the spirit and nourishes the soul.
Where there is sickness and demonic oppression , they must flee in the fiery face of God’s true Word:
“He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.” (Psalms 107:20 KJV)
Where mountainous obstacles resist the progress of the Kingdom, His anointed word will break the yoke and crush the boulders:
“Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?” (Jeremiah 23:29 KJV)
Treasure the Bible and receive it’s truths as they really are, the very life of your spirit. This Book is no ordinary Book. Papa has chosen the medium of words to express and impart His nature to those who will receive it.
Know this though, it is not for the faint hearted. God’s Word will be the fire that burns the dross of compromise from your life. It is the fuller’s soap that will scrub your thinking. It will become like a fire in your bones, insisting on its right to rule.
God’s Word in your heart is God Himself taking up residence. It is the new law of your being, opening up endless possibility.
“If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” (John 15:7 KJV)
Is there any clearer promise in all of Scripture than this?
Any call to fervent believing prayer so fulsome?
Dear friends, let us dedicate ourselves afresh to the Word of God. Come to the Book as you would to its Writer, for they are one and the same. Receive it, believe it, act upon it.
Our world does not need another sermon or seminar, another conference or community project, it needs to see the risen King on glorious display, doing all that He did when He walked the earth.
One thing is needed in both Church and world – God Himself, and you as His carrier!
